In this commission I was aware that the relationship between this professional working
mother and children, was different to the notion of ‘mother’ as had been portrayed in the past.
In this sculpture we see each individual as separately evolving and yet in equal relation.
The spaces between the figures showspace to become. I felt that this was an important finding of my observation.

When their new baby was born, I was invited to make another sculpture of the new baby.

However when I visited the little family and watched the baby being bathed dressed and held.
It seemed to me that I should draw from this beautiful activity instead.

The plaster block print edition was inspired by my memory of this delightful moment that had required a witness.
I added the witness on the top right of the block.
Before, when I had delivered the bronze of the three figures, the excited children jumping up and down
told me that they had just got a little goldfish and were very excited about that.

To the children, a bronze, or a little fish was equally good fun!
So the fish found its way into the plaster block print of the new baby, as part of the whole experience.
The fish is also a symbol of life.

Mr John Garfield 1989 - 90 - Bronze Ed. 2

for John on his Birthday
1930 - 1990
Remember a sense of being.
Ran the park, swam the sea;
that was enough!
But now being at the crux
of fact and time is an abundant priveledge.
The dart flies fast
And being so enriched is wonderful.
